In 1952 the Scottdale Joint School System was formed. This was the year our class graduated from 8th grade. We came from four schools in the Scottdale Borough: Pittsburgh Street Grade School; North Grade School; South Grade School and St. John the Baptist Catholic School; two in Everson Borough: Everson Grade School and St. Joseph's Polish Catholic School; and three in Upper Tyrone Township: Kingview Grade School; South Everson Grade School and Owensdale Grade School. The Borough of Scottdale is located in Westmoreland County while the others are in Fayette County, PA.
Several students from the schools outside the Scottdale Borough opted to attend Connellsville and East Huntingdon High Schools as they were permitted to do before the jointure. The new system allowed this as a courtesy. Future classes were not given this option. And so it was in the fall of 1952 the first high school class under the new jointure came together with 136 strong at the old Scottdale Junior High Building on Chestnut Street. Through the years we lost some, but also gained a few so that we entered our senior year 120 strong. Of these, 113 actually graduated at the Scottdale Armory on June 5, 1956. One of our classmates had married at the end of our Junior year and was expecting the first baby of our class. This was Nancy Ansell Warburton. Allowing Nancy to complete her education after marriage was another milestone for our school system.
Our class pioneered many activities including a trip to Gettysburg, PA and Washington, DC at the end of our Junior Year in May 1955. It was the Beta Tri Hi Y of our class who sponsored the first Valentine Dance complete with Queen Mona Lee Sanders and her attendants: Phyllis Shannon and Christine Blackburn. We also made history when we challenged our School Board when an attempt was made to censor our yearbook. As we prepared for our 50 year reunion, there were 20 class members known to be deceased. During the following two years we lost four more.
Pictured here are our class members as they appeared the week prior to graduation. On Class Files they can be viewed at our class reunions which have been held every five years. There are also some class members' individual families and stories. Enjoy!
